CONGRESS COMPLETES CANVASSING OF VOTES FOR PRESIDENTIAL & VP CANDIDATES IN RECORD TIME

The House-Senate Joint Canvassing Committee, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers and co-chaired by House Majority Leader Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, on Wednesday was able to expeditiously process 171 out of 173 Certificates of Canvass (COCs) for the 2022 presidential and vice presidential candidates, without compromising the full transparency and accuracy of the proceedings. Despite encountering setbacks brought about by the absence of COCs inside the ballot boxes from several overseas and local precincts, the joint panel accomplished its constitutional mandate, the fastest in the history of Philippine elections. Meanwhile, ballot boxes from Syria and Argentina have not yet arrived at the House of Representatives. However, the joint panel already terminated the canvassing proceedings as these would not affect the winners of the final and official tally. The session was suspended while the members awaited the drafting of the Joint Committee Report. It was adopted before the Joint Public Session reconvened. In his sponsorship speech of the Joint Committee Report, Romualdez cited that former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. led the presidential race by a huge margin, garnering 31,629,783 votes or 58.77 percent of the total votes cast. He added that Marcos' running mate, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, likewise topped the vice presidential race with 32,208,417 votes or 61.53 percent of the total votes cast. The President-elect and Vice President-elect were officially proclaimed today during the Joint Public Session.
