The House Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Relations and Diplomacy chaired by Rep. Sandra Eriguel, M.D. (Second District, La Union) adopted on Wednesday House Resolution 2281, congratulating Rechie Valdez for becoming the first Filipino-Canadian woman to be elected Member of Parliament in the September 20, 2021 Canadian federal election. The panel also approved the corresponding committee report on HR 2281, authored by Rep. Ruth Mariano-Hernandez (Second District, Laguna). The resolution stated that Valdez ended the 17-year drought for Filipino-Canadians in Ottawa after winning the seat as the Member for Parliament for the Mississauga-Streetsville riding (election district) in Ontario, Canada. Valdez is the first Filipina to get elected in the House of Commons and the second Filipino-Canadian to sit as a Member of Parliament after Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, who was elected as MP and served as a cabinet minister from 1998 to 2004. Valdez was born in Zambia, Central Africa to Filipino parents Zosimo and Normita Salazar. She immigrated to Canada with her brother in 1989. Committee Vice Chair and Batangas Rep. Ma. Theresa Collantes sponsored the resolution on behalf of Mariano-Hernandez. Meanwhile, Eriguel said the resolution is very relevant, particularly with the active bilateral relations and meaningful exchanges between the Philippines and Canada. Department of Foreign Affairs - Office of American Affairs (DFA-OAA) Executive Director Romulo Victor Israel Jr. said the DFA supports the resolution. “We take due note of the significant historic value of her election,” he said.
