On Friday, the House of Representatives closed the period of sponsorship and debate on the P22.093-billion proposed 2021 budget of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and its attached agencies. Lawmakers were assured that the agency continues to undertake its duty to provide assistance to Filipinos overseas. Committee on Appropriations Vice Chairman Rep. Joey Sarte Salceda (2nd District, Albay), plenary sponsor of the budget, cited that P984 million from the Assistance to Nationals (ATN) Fund and P109 million from the Legal Assistance Fund (LAF) have already been utilized by the DFA this year to assist OFWs and other migrants facing legal charges. He added that a total of 60,933 individuals have benefited from the ATN this year. For next year, the DFA has again allocated P1 billion to the ATN Fund and P200 million for the LAF to further protect the rights and welfare of Filipinos overseas.
