The House of Representatives, led by Speaker Alan Peter “Compañero” Cayetano, approved on second reading Wednesday, House Bill No. 6732, granting ABS-CBN authority to operate until October 31, 2020. The measure, authored by Speaker Cayetano and several House leaders, aims to remedy the sudden stop in the network’s broadcast, while the House holds impartial, comprehensive and extensive deliberations on proposals for its franchise for another 25 years. In sponsoring the bill, Speaker Cayetano expressed dismay over how the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) distracted the nation’s focus on the COVID-19 pandemic by halting the network’s broadcast without notice and due process.
