Cebu's First and Only Woman Governor and now Congresswoman Gwendolyn Fiel Garcia, proudly congratulates Ms. Jamie Herrell as the country's representative in this year's Miss Earth international beauty pageant. "Her coronation last Sunday Night (11 May 2014) at the Mall of Asia Arena as Miss Philippines Earth 2014 is a testament to the true beauty, grace, and environmental consciousness that the Cebuanos are known for," Cong. Gwen said. She is the second from Cebu to earn the title, after Karla Henry won the crown in 2008.
Miss Philippines-Earth serves as the ambassador on environmental protection campaigns in the country. Ms. Herrell's sincerity in her personal advocacy for environmental protection was evident in her answer as to whether she thinks we have been good children to Mother Earth. Her winning reply was, "Honestly, in my opinion, we haven't been good children. In fact, I believe that we are the number one cause of her problems, we are the reason why we're having climate change, and we are the reason why we're having floods. But in return, if we can only help her and salvage her, she will help us back and take care of us too."
"It was not only Jamie's good physique and elegance that made her win, the judges saw her honesty and personal dedication to the environment, and that made this Cebuana stand out in the pageant. Her triumph in this prestigious beauty pageant will pave way for more Environmental Awareness program especially that Cebu Province is known for its Eco-Tourism management program since 2004. My warmest congratulations to Jamie for winning the title and for her outstanding advocacies for Mother Earth. I would like also to congratulate the other candidates who represented Cebu Province. You did a great job ladies!" Cong. Gwen added.
She was the Guest Speaker of Miss Earth Foundation Inc., last April 5, 2014 during their Eco-Tourism Seminar held at Makati City wherein she highlighted the Suroy Suroy Sugbo -Cebu's most well-known tourism junket, to the lovely candidates vying for the Miss Philippines Earth 2014 title. The Congresswoman is currently in the People's Republic of China together with 11 other lady legislator for a 10 day Official Trip visit upon the invitation of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The official visit would help further promote the mutual understanding and friendship between China and the Philippines especially that Congresswoman Gwen, during her gubernatorial stint, played a key part and was very prominent on the establishment of a very strong bilateral ties now enjoyed between China and the Province of Cebu.
