Reps. Geraldine Roman (1st District, Bataan) and Arlene Brosas (Party-list, GABRIELA) shared in a press conference on Wednesday that they have taken immediate action on the case concerning Gretchen Custodio Diez, a transgender woman, who was harshly discriminated by the personnel of a mall in Quezon City after entering the women’s comfort room.
The legislators pronounced that they filed a House resolution, seeking to investigate, in aid of legislation, the discrimination and harassment committed against Diez.
Roman said that they are determined to pass the measure that would prohibit the discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression (SOGIE).
She noted that the SOGIE bill received unanimous support from the Members of the 17th Congress and was approved on third and final reading. It was, however, not deliberated upon in the Senate.
Roman then pleaded for the Filipinos to respect their rights, and called for the LGBT Community to continue to fight with them in Congress.
“It is time to demand from our public servants what is due to us as Filipinos and as human beings,” Roman said.
Brosas raised that the country still lacks legislation that acknowledges and protects the rights of the members of the LGBT Community. / Molie Gonzales, News and Documentation Section-Press and Public Affairs Bureau/ House of Representatives of the Philippines
