Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III received support from a lawmaker despite recent calls from certain groups for the Labor Chief’s resignation.
“Whatever accusation they have against Secretary Bello, his performance as labor chief speaks well of his competence and thus there is no reason for him to resign,” Davao Oriental 2nd District Representative and Commission on Appointments (CA) Member Mayo Almario said.
A recent complaint was filed against Secretary Bello before President Rodrigo Duterte's Anti-Corruption Commission for allegedly accepting gifts and demanding bribes.
"For Secretary Bello to take interest in allegedly accepting P100,000 cash and cellphone as Christmas gifts sounds absurd. He will not tarnish his good name for those items," Almario said.
Almario is the the Chair of CA’s Committee on Labor and Social Welfare and the sponsor for Bello’s appointment’s confirmation as secretary of the Department of Labor and Employment, in June 2016. The CA is a Constitutional body tasked with determining the fitness and qualifications of nominees or appointees for select government officials. All appointees undergo a strict selection process before facing the CA panel for interview, a process which Bello underwent.
