DFA: NO NEED FOR ADDITIONAL BUDGET TO HELP GOVERNMENT ADDRESS PANDEMIC

15 September 2020 08:21:35 PM

In a hearing on Tuesday, the Committee on Appropriations chaired by ACT-CIS Partylist Rep. Eric Go Yap discussed the components of the P21.96 billion proposed budget of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for Fiscal Year 2021. The DFA’s budget focuses on the welfare and repatriation of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who lost their jobs due to pandemic. DFA Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said the department has already assisted in the repatriation of 178,000 OFWs and is still expecting another 177,000 OFWs coming home though chartered and commercial flights. The DFA decided to relinquish the budget for the opening of their Foreign Service Posts (FSPs) and other projects, and offered these as savings to help the national government address the pandemic. Secretary Locsin also said the DFA would no longer ask for an additional budget and will realign instead its funds to contribute to the national economic development while ensuring territorial integrity and security, and the promotion of Philippine culture and its standing in the global community.
