The Committee on Appropriations on Tuesday deliberated on the P605.74 billion 2021 proposed budget of the Department of Education (DepEd), which is 9.5 percent higher than its 2020 appropriation of P552.99 billion. While the education sector continues to adapt to the new normal, Education Secretary Leonor Briones assured the committee that the agency’s requested allocation would set the groundwork for exploring technologies to advance distance learning. “We are looking at the future of education. We know that our buildings and equipment will not be responsive anymore once we move on into the new normal,” she said. Deputy Majority Leader Juan Miguel Macapagal Arroyo urged the DepEd to ensure access to internet connections, especially for schools in far-flung areas. Meanwhile, Rep. Stella Luz Quimbo (2nd District, Marikina City) vowed to help DepEd, through legislation, in its thrust to provide internet allowances to public school teachers. The hearing was presided over by Committee Vice Chairperson Rep. Jocelyn Sy Limkaichong (1st District, Negros Oriental).
