Members of the House of Representatives rose beyond political affiliations to unite in support of the Filipino athletes competing at the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA Games) as well as the organizers seeking to deliver the highest quality of hospitality and services throughout the international event. In a privilege speech on Wednesday, Rep. Ron Salo (Party-list, KABAYAN) called on fellow House Members, the media, and the Filipino people to work together for the SEA Games. Interpellators from both the Majority and Minority backed Salo's unity call as they stressed the importance of keeping the peace and uniting for the sake of the Filipino athletes and the organizers. Rep. Jericho Nograles (Party-list, PBA) emphasized that the focus should be on sports and not on politicking, while Rep. Jose Antonio Sy-Alvarado (1st District, Bulacan) emphasized that the SEA Games is a time and opportunity for unity. Rep. Enrico Pineda (Party-list, 1-PACMAN) stressed that the SEA Games "is a group effort, a national effort." Further, Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta reminded that the honor of the Philippines is at stake. Rep. Michael Defensor (Party-list, ANAKALUSUGAN) lamented that criticisms have served to "divide our country and not to unite" at a time when Filipinos should be supporting their countrymen participating in and organizing the historic event. Finally, Minority Leader Bienvenido Abante Jr. proclaimed that the Filipino athletes should feel the support of the House and the public as a whole. Quoting a biblical passage, Abante reminded everyone that "A house divided against itself cannot stand."
