Bringing the strong diplomatic ties of the Philippines and Japan to the fore, former President and now House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo joined Ambassador of Japan to the Philippines His Excellency Koji Haneda on Tuesday to celebrate the ascension of Emperor Naruhito to the Chrysanthemum Throne. Alongside Speaker Arroyo were former First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo and H.E. Haneda's wife, Iheka Haneda. The event was also attended by Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Senator Aquilino Pimentel, former Prime Minister Cesar Virata, and other Filipino and Japanese dignitaries. In his speech, H.E. Haneda stressed the strong relationship of the Philippines and Japan that has manifested in thriving people to people relations, robust labor ties, and extensive cultural exchange. He added that he is convinced that the harmony of Philippine-Japanese friendship will continue as Japan enters its Reiwa Era under Emperor Naruhito. Meanwhile, Secretary Locsin said that Japan's new era will provide a strong impetus for the strategic partnership of the two nations.
