An early morning site visit by Former President and now House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo kicked off with a warm welcome from retired high-ranking servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) who were awarded housing in Taguig City under Presidential Proclamation 284 during her presidency. The Bonifacio Heights Condominiums, a 7-hectare off-base residential development, houses 1,490 condominium units dedicated to retired officers of the AFP. Over coffee and breakfast, several retired AFP officers expressed their gratitude to Speaker Arroyo for ensuring that they were able to enjoy homeownership after decades of loyal service to the country. Former Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council Chairman Mike Defensor, who attended the meeting, recounted that the residential development is a product of careful collaboration between the AFP, National Housing Authority (NHA), and the private contractor to consider the salaries of military personnel and officers and ensure that costs were not prohibitive. Meanwhile, Speaker Arroyo shared how revitalizing the housing industry was as much a boon to the beneficiaries as it was to the Philippine economy in the early 2000s. During her Presidency, her work to massively slash red tape in the processing of housing permits and to convince the Bangko Central ng Pilipinas to make banking requirements more liberal breathed life into housing industry, keeping the domestic economy afloat even as the global economy buckled under the weight of the recession. Partnerships with private land developers to turn government-owned land, particularly large swathes of land owned by the military, further allowed the beneficiaries to finally receive much-deserved affordable housing. The event was attended by Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano, AFP Brig. Gen. Augusto Tolentino, retired AFP Vice Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Nestor Ochoa, retired AFP Deputy Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Christie Datu, as well as other residents of the housing development. | Perfecto Camero / Czarina Engracia
