Rep. Winston Castelo (2nd District, Quezon City), Chairman of the House Committee on Metro Manila Development welcomes presenters and participants to the summit on disaster preparation plans of the different government agencies, local governments and organizations from the private sector. The summit is part of the week-long Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Congress spearheaded by the panel and held at the House of Representatives. It focuses on the strategies and policies of government and private agencies on disaster preparation during the occurrence of any disaster in the country, especially in Metro Manila. Former President and House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, in her message, said the forum is “very useful for our legislators to decide whether to craft new or amend policies and for the general public who should be apprised about the appropriate individual responses that can mitigate if not avert the ill effects of earthquakes and floods.” The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS) led by Undersecretary Renato Solidum, Jr. gave a seminar and film showing on what to do before, during, and after a mega-quake like the “Big One” while the Department of Health (DOH), Climate Change Commission (CCC), GLOBE Telecommunications Company, San Miguel Corporation including the National Resilience Council (NRC) presented their disaster preparation plans. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management presented their master plan on flood control, risk reduction and management. | Ma. Victoria Palomar/Gilbert Engay
