MANILA BAY CLEAN-UP

MANILA BAY CLEAN-UP

09 August 2018 08:35:46 PM

The House Committee on Appropriations chaired by Rep. Karlo Alexei Nograles (1st District, Davao City) called on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), led by Secretary Roy Cimatu, to start rehabilitating Manila Bay. The DENR is one of the 13 government agencies ordered by the Supreme Court to rehabilitate and preserve Manila Bay. The absence of waste water treatment facilities has made Manila Bay the dumping ground of human waste and garbage. During the DENR’s budget briefing, Rep. Estrellita Suansing (District, Nueva Ecija), chairperson of the Committee on Ecology, said Congress can help the DENR address the problem since “our committee has identified the problems affecting Manila Bay”. Among those who attended the briefing were Reps. Maria Carmen Zamora (1st District, Compostela Valley), Wilfredo Caminero (2nd District, Cebu), Gary Alejano (Party-list, MAGDALO), Amado Espino Jr. (5th District, Pangasinan), Jesulito Manalo (Party-list, ANGKLA), Jesse Mangaoang (Lone District, Kalinga), and Tom Villarin (Party-list, AKBAYAN). Also present were DENR Undersecretaries Ernesto Adobo, Jr. and Jonas Leones. / Vicky Palomar/ Gilbert Engay
