Former President and now House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Committee on Economic Affairs chairman Arthur Yap (3rd District, Bohol) (first from left) joined members of the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) to clarify the stand of Speaker Arroyo on the tariffication of meat products. In the press conference, Speaker Arroyo said she is not advocating for the importation of meat products at reduced tariff rates. Speaker Arroyo also urged SINAG to help the government lower the prices of goods. She likewise cited solutions crafted by economic managers to address inflation, such as tariffication, rice importation, oil prices and the exchange rate. She pointed out these were brought up and shortlisted during a freewheeling discussion with economic managers and House Members, including Rep. Joey Salceda (2nd District, Albay) last week. The press conference was held by SINAG to call on the government to support efforts to address inflation by improving local production and reducing retail prices. SINAG Chair Rosendo So (fourth from left) noted that farmgate prices have remained constant and are on the downward trend. He said the retail price of meat products should be the one to be addressed. He further stated that reducing tariffs on corn and wheat will lead to cheaper meat products. Responding to the request of Speaker Arroyo, So said his group will help the government address inflation. /Czarina Engracia/Pecto Camero
